FD Article #3

What are the major issues at stake in the coming election? The economy? Surely. Healthcare? Absolutely. But what if these issues pale in comparison to what should be the most important issue for Americans? I’m talking about the survival of the Constitution.

In the back and forth political arguments of the day, the media tends to focus on trivial things that broaden the chasm between the false paradigm of the left and right, without ever focusing on the fundamentals of our nation, and the things we have in common. It is because of this that very few understand what is at stake in the political decisions we will make in the immediate future.
The first thing we must do is reject the false division of left and right, and adopt the true political scale which has anarchy on one side, and tyranny on the other.
Tyranny--------------------------------------------------------------Anarchy
In this, the true political scale, the two major parties in the U.S. share a spot together much closer to tyranny, and are far away from the centrist position chosen by our founders.
Tyranny----Dems/Reps-----------Founders----------------------Anarchy
Once this true political scale is embraced, then we can start looking at the real problems.
Our Constitution is the manifestation of the principle that man has inalienable rights untouchable by government. Our nation was founded on that principle. This was a revolutionary way of thinking. For the first time in history, man was not subordinate to some absurd notion of royalty, and the people were protected from runaway government at all levels. Government was based on a principle that its purpose is to protect the rights of the people.
I don't think that liberals or conservatives would argue the fact that these notions are as sound today as they were when penned by Thomas Jefferson, but today, those principles are hanging by a thread.
The problem is that in the arguments of the day, these principles are never discussed. If we have an argument over public healthcare, we argue over how one party is more compassionate than the other, without ever considering how the implementation of legislation might impact the principles of liberty on which the country was founded. The result is a slow (getting faster every day) erosion of our rights for things that might seem ok in the short term, but are disasters in the long term because of the ever expanding government that they create, and it is an unfortunate fact of life that as government grows, liberty dies.
We have allowed government at all levels to infringe our right to speech, religion, a fair trial, and virtually all others enumerated in the bill of rights, and hundreds of others not listed.
Do we really want to give these rights over to the whims of government? I think not. History shows us examples of many others who have done so to their eternal dismay. If the price of liberty is eternal vigilance, and liberty is what we want, we must never find fault with those who are vigilant.
The warning signs are everywhere. Without respect for the Constitution despots appear at all levels. Is it ok that police use paramilitary tactics against peaceful protestors? Or if a local sheriff decides that the public can no longer speak out at town board meetings? Or that a President can attack another sovereign nation with no mandate from Congress, or the people? Is the next step of eliminating political enemies in the same fashion very far away? It can’t happen here you say? What is to prevent it if the Constitution is all but ignored?
We have reached that stage, where our government almost completely ignores the Constitution, and without holding the government back, there are no limits to what they can do “for the public good”. If we the people do not do something to keep them in check, it will be gone forever, giving over our sovereignty to some international authority. Put aside the party bickering for a moment and make a determination. IS THIS WHAT YOU WANT?
If not, then there is but one thing to do. Get active and start demanding that your elected officials at all levels follow the Constitution. It can no longer be ok with you when your party ignores the Constitution, any more than when the opposition does. When deciding a course of action, the first question to consider must be: Is it Constitutional? If not, then the course is already set.
The Constitutional limits placed on the Federal government led to the development of the freest, richest, most advanced nation on earth, and we are letting it be squandered away by forgetting what brought us here, and ignoring the lessons of history concerning what causes the death of nations. It’s time to wake up to what is at stake, and make a stand.
